Cerebrolysin — Neurotrophic Peptide Preparation for Neurological Research
Cerebrolysin is not a single peptide but a standardized neuropeptide preparation (also called cerebroprotein hydrolysate, CAS 12656-61-0) produced by enzymatic breakdown of purified porcine brain proteins. It is a defined mixture of low-molecular-weight biologically active neuropeptides (roughly 15%, fragments under 10 kDa) plus free amino acids (roughly 85%). The “60mg” designation refers to the peptide content per vial, the common research SKU.
Mechanism of Action
Cerebrolysin is studied as a neurotrophic and neuroprotective agent that mimics endogenous neurotrophic-factor activity (BDNF-, GDNF-, NGF- and CNTF-like). In research models it is reported to reduce excitotoxicity and apoptosis, support neuronal metabolism, and promote neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity. Its action is pleiotropic with no single receptor — it engages neurotrophin signaling pathways, reduces calpain activation, and modulates amyloid-precursor-protein processing.
